If you train BJJ in kimono regularly, the chances of you having finger joint problems at any given time are almost 100% certain. While it's wise to give the joint time to heal, some of us insist on training, compounding the problem.
Joint swelling is caused by trauma from pulling, kimono hitting, constant pressure, impact, and pulling can result in deformed fingers. Many studies have been done on the subject of swollen finger joints in jiu jitsu, including other sports such as judo.
To mitigate these types of injuries, the trick is to use a good quality sports tape and wrap the tape around the fingers to protect the joints.
